Understanding Child Riders

Contrary to what most people tend to believe, a child rider, or a rider in general, is not a term for automobile insurance. In fact, "rider" is a term that is specific to life insurance policies. Though there are many specifics and life coverage death benefits for this kind of policy, you can basically define the term "rider" by saying that the rider is anyone that is attached to the policy of an already established contract for additional coverage at the cost of an additional charge for the monthly premium by the policy holder.

A Possible Scenario

Let's say that you wake up one morning to see that your alarm did not go off. You have to get your youngest child to soccer practice in less than half an hour. Speeding out of bed, you charge into his room and wake him up. Rushing him through the shower and running to get changed yourself, you head out the door in record time. With a mug of coffee in hand, you whip out of the driveway and are on your way.

As you drive, you notice that there is more construction on the road ahead. Trying to pass through it as safely as possible, you mange to swerve and get through it in just enough time so that your child is not too late. But then, an unobserved pothole appears before you have time to react. Bumping into it causes your coffee to spill all over your pants, burning you instantly. In a fit of panic and pain, you release the wheel to try and pat the heat down. However, you do not notice that your wheel has spun to put you into the other lane right up against oncoming traffic.

This is not a scene that anyone wants to think about, but it is a scene that is very possible for most families. But what if your child did not have rider coverage on your spouse's policy. If you were not riders, then you both might pass away at the scene of the accident, leaving your spouse in a state of grief with no compensation for the accident. The last thing that most spouses would be worrying about is compensation, but if there is nothing left for him or her, your spouse could find him or herself struggling financially for the rest of their lives simply because you did not have rider status.

Rider Policies

Basically, you can have riders on one policy so that you do not have to have separate policies for everyone in the family. This includes children, of course. A child does not necessarily need life insurance, but if you want to be certain that he or she is covered in the event of an accident like the one described above, you might find that this kind of policy is very beneficial to you. Usually, a child rider does not add much in the way of finances to a single policy. But, it gives you the peace of mind that if anyone in the family were to pass away, the remaining family members would be compensated for it.

Nothing would pain parents more than learning of their child's death. However, at the very least in the event of an accident, rider status would see to it that the parents were at least left with something to help with the bills and funeral costs. Understanding child riders can help you stay out of financial issues if a child were to pass away. Since the final expenses can be pricy, this kind of addition to a policy is a good idea for any parent.
