Talking to Your Kids About Healthy Habits
You want your children to stay healthy as they grow and remain healthy for as long as they live. Getting them to adopt healthy habits is one way to ensure that they get on the road to a healthy life and stay there. The examples you set are often the easiest way for your child to learn what healthy habits are. Your children are likely to watch everything you do and then follow your example.
Actions are louder than Words
If you are practicing healthy habits each day you are setting a good example for your children to follow. If you do not smoke, they are less likely to take up the habit later on in life themselves, for instance. If you enjoy exercising and make it seem genuinely like it is a source of fun, your children will likely think getting out and playing outside is a more attractive option than staying inside and playing computer games.
It is harder to get your child to practice a healthy habit if you do not demonstrate the same behavior yourself. When it comes to brushing teeth and flossing, do you stand over the sink with them and tell them what to do and how to do it? Do they never see you brushing your teeth? If so, they may feel as if they are being told what to do, without understanding why and therefore rebel against you by refusing to do what you ask.
This is where it might be important to understand the best way to talk to your kids about the healthy habits they need to practice. When it comes to brushing their teeth, you might stop watching over them for a change. Instead, take your toothbrush and toothpaste out and brush your teeth together with them. Let them know this is a great way to make their teeth healthy and sparkling white.
Also, let them know that by brushing their teeth they are getting rid of germs that can cause cavities. All they need to know is that a cavity is something that makes them hurt just like a cut or bruise might do. They will soon understand especially if you are setting an example by your actions that brushing teeth is something good for them to do.
But, as your children grow there are other things besides practicing good hygiene which are important for them to understand. You may have always done your best to provide them with healthy eating habits. Maybe you always made certain to have apple slices or raisins ready for them to grab right after school, but what happens when they start gaining more independence? They may visit a friend's house where after school snacks are a junk food junkie's dream come true.
You may not be able to be there to tell them to leave the donut or snack cake alone. But, if you have explained to them how healthy eating habits make them feel good and stay healthy, you can probably stop worrying. Eating well sometimes means indulging every once in a while. You do not want your child to feel that the habits they need to practice for good health add up to torture.
If they understand that an occasional snack treat is perfectly fine, they can enjoy that treat and resume healthy eating habits with no problems. When talking to your kids about healthy habits, remember that actions do speak louder than words. Show them good examples of healthy, enjoyable habits and they are sure to get the message.
