How Can I Stay Busy and Active Into my Senior Years?
If you are well into your senior years, then you know that the key to living well is to stay active. If you are just approaching your golden years, it is important that you stay active as far as exercise and also social outings are concerned and you may not even need a home healthcare provider. If you have a very close and supportive community, surrounded by a robust network of peers, family, and neighbors, this may be fairly easy.
Yet, if you have lived in a community for many years where everyone pretty much kept to themselves, this is one time to break the trend. It may have been very peaceful for you during your working or child-rearing years to enjoy this type of quiet. As a senior, it is essential that if you do not have family or neighbors to support you, that you seek out the senior community in your area.
Value of Senior Centers
Many senior community centers exist to support you, keep you socially connected, feed you, and even provide exercise programs. If you are essentially alone, then you may also find that some senior centers provide even more life lines for you. For instance, some may have Gin Rummy on Wednesdays, or Spanish classes on Tuesdays, while others may add on rides to the doctor.
If you are living your senior years happily secluded in your home, consider adding a social and exercise routine to your life. This can allow you to enjoy your peace and quiet while you are at home, but give you a chance to blossom in the community outside your front door. Otherwise, if you have many grandchildren, you may want to take a good, healthy interest in their lives.
They may need someone to talk to, play with, and even just get a ride to and from school. Having friends and family of all ages can keep you going strong for many years to come. They can keep you youthful and happy. Also, if you have come to the point in your life in which you would like to have a pet, it is a good time to consider this. Pets are known to help people lower their blood pressure, relax, and experience joy.
Another way to stay active is to involve a friend. If you have a near and dear friend with whom you can spend a lot of time, consider joining an exercise class together. There are many senior focused exercise classes out there.
Undoing Medical Limits
If you have had a recent setback, such as a nagging knee pain, or a back ache that has limited your exercise, do not stop. Work with the instructor, and your medical professional to determine whether physical therapy will help your situation or not. In addition, when faced with a life-long alteration to your breadth of movement, change your exercise to suit you. For instance, your doctor may have you use an exercise bike for 30 minutes while your exercise class is doing the intense jumping and knee stretches. When you have finished on the bike, you might rejoin the class for the gentle stretching, arm exercises, and abdominal workouts.
There are many ways to stay active into your senior years. One of those ways is to seek social support, even if you live alone. Try local senior community centers, and even look at them for new friendships and support. Many times they can help you out with rides to your doctors, or even a trip to see musicals, or a weekend jaunt to a local casino.
