Single Moms on a Budget
When you are a single mom you may feel as if your hobby and your work are all one in the same, because you may be working very hard. It can be a bit rough to respond to the outside economy -- whether we are in an upswing or a downturn. And, this can take away chances to enjoy opportunities to snap up that great vacation deal, or that dream home that you have always wanted for you and your kids. The idea is not to feel dissuaded from making any more dreams. Instead, know that you will just need to employ a bit more discipline, planning, and budgeting to get to the goals that you have for yourself and your children by balancing family and work.
While other two-earner couples may not have any reservations or financial restrictions to giving their children everything they desire, you may have to be a bit more judicious in your giving. It is not only a matter of planning but also about factoring into the equation your priorities. If education tops the list, or special health needs that must be met, then focus on those first and foremost. If you have to cover housing on your own, but no longer or never owned a home, then you may have the luxury of flexibility.
While you may not want to uproot your family from their hometown, if it means that you can send your kids to the excellent public schools in another town when you move, then it may be well worth it. In addition, you may even want to consider health-plan friendly lines of work that will provide a great reduction on health insurance. Such a career might be in healthcare, whether working for a doctor, or even a hospital in one capacity or another.
Staying Warm and Well Fed
You may feel like you have to choose between food and heat or electricity, but know that there are some homes that are more affordable to live in than others. If you do decide to move, know that typically newer construction homes are more air tight, and may allow you to stay warm all winter or cool all summer if you have a great place in which to live. These decisions may not make more money, but at least they help you to cut down on some of the regularly recurring costs that could truly otherwise send you and your family into dire situations.
Instead, now you will have the opportunity to focus on the costs that cannot be reduced just by moving alone. One that we need to revisit is the food bill. Again, attention to detail and proper planning can make a great deal of difference. Even if you swear by local and organic fresh foods, when you buy in season items that are from local areas, it will save you money on your groceries. It may be tempting to go out to eat every time your little girl has her soccer games, but it may not fit the budget. Keep a well stocked backup of snacks and beverages for your kids. It can help you to save a ton of money that would otherwise fly from your car window straight into the drive thru window.
Single moms on a budget are smart moms, who provide very well for their families. Be sure to share your tips on budgeting and saving with your children so that they learn the ways to live well without overspending on necessities. It can be done, because single moms have been raising families for years.
