What are the Signs of Heart Disease?

Knowing the signs of heart disease can help you take better care of yourself and possibly prevent it. Taking preventative measures like lowering blood pressure may take patience and a little more effort. But, taking preventative measures are better than needing to deal with alternatives such as risky surgeries or needing to make drastic changes to your lifestyle in the wake of a heart attack.

Living with a Heart Condition

For people who have been diagnosed with angina, they are already aware that they are living with a condition that could result in a heart attack one day. Angina is often described as a feeling of pressure or heaviness in the chest. It can also create discomfort in the arms, neck or even the jaw. It can often be mistaken for heart burn or indigestion.

If you have feelings such as these and have not yet been diagnosed with heart disease it is important to get to your doctor as soon as you can. You can manage living with angina, but you will need to take extra care of your diet and follow all of your doctor's instructions. He or she can provide you with medication to help the condition, if necessary. For milder forms of angina the symptoms may only be present during times of physical exertion or emotional distress.

These symptoms usually will subside with rest. For more serious forms of angina, there is a good chance that if the symptoms get progressively worse it could lead to a person suffering a heart attack. This is why knowing that any unusual or persistent chest pain that develops could be something more serious than simple heart burn is important. It could be a sign that you have heart disease.

There are some forms of angina, however, that are not an indication of heart disease. This is another reason why you should have any symptoms that are suspicious checked by your doctor. If you have suddenly or recently begun to feel as though your heartbeat is racing, it is another symptom to have checked by your doctor as this could be an arrhythmia which could also be part of a developing or worsening heart disease condition.

Checking things with Your Doctor

Often a racing heartbeat which comes out of the blue is frightening, but it may not necessarily be a sign of heart disease. It depends upon whether or not this symptom begins to occur more and more often. If you take too much caffeine, for instance, it can result in experiencing a racing heartbeat. This, of course, should pass and be no cause for concern. There are also some other illnesses which may cause you to experience an irregular heartbeat.

Once the illness is treated the symptom goes away. This is not the case when heart disease is the root cause of the arrhythmia. If you notice more often that you have a fluttering, racing or skipping heart beat get to your doctor right away. Heart disease is not something you can cure, however, it is something you can either aim to prevent or manage as best as possible.

If you smoke, you need to quit in order to prevent heart disease. If you already have heart disease, it is imperative to quit smoking in order to keep from experiencing a heart attack. Eating right and exercising also help anyone with heart disease manage their health in a better way. It is best to speak with your doctor to find out what suitable exercise regimens are right for you to manage any and all signs of heart disease.
