Should I Use an Agent?

If you are going to start looking for term life insurance to protect your family if you should pass away, you may have many unanswered questions. For starters, you may be wondering if you need to, have to, or should use a term life insurance agent to locate the best products and premium prices for the policy. The truth is that insurance agents are a great help once you have determined that you want a policy from a particular insurance agency. Another factor could be when the policy starts as well.

Though, starting out by going directly to an insurance agency, where they have insurance agents, may unnecessarily or prematurely limit your search for your policy. The reason that this is true is because when you are shopping for insurance, an agent works for one agency and only sells their products. You may instead want to start out with a broader scope for the purposes of meeting your insurance needs.

Finding Starting Points

It is best to first determine the amount that you would like paid out to your beneficiaries in the case that you pass away during the policy term. Consider the big expenses first. This will include the mortgage, funeral costs, and even possibly your kids college education. When you have tallied that up, you will have an idea of how much you would like your insurance policy to pay out. If you already have a house without any note on it, then you can delete that from the equation. Consider the impact of such expenses that can creep up on you, such as property taxes. Even if your home were paid off, you would still need to arm your family with the financial means to keep up with rising expenses.

Though, given the statistically low probability of you passing away during the term of the policy, you may want to look at a few options. Many individuals buy their policies at a young age, which allows them to receive more competitive rates for the duration of the policy. Others may choose to keep a shorter term, and shop for a new policy in five years or even just ten years. It depends upon the individual.

Ways to Reduce Rates

If you are shopping for a policy, it is not necessarily compulsory for you to undergo a medical exam. That said, if you are relatively healthy, then you may want to submit to policies that require this anyhow. The reason is that it will reduce your policy premium cost. If you are planning on leaving the roofing industry for a desk job in five years, then you may want your term life insurance policy for just five years, because your rates may be lower in five years when you take on the desk job.

Other ways to reduce rates include leading a healthy lifestyle. If you are fifty pounds overweight now, and smoke, you will likely receive better rates after a few years of being a non-smoker who is at your ideal weight. So, there are times when it actually makes more sense to purchase a shorter term policy for your life insurance. Otherwise, if you are already at a safer job, very healthy, and young, then it may make more sense to maximize your policy. Once you have determined the length and risk factors, then you can begin to shop for policies.

No one can tell you if you should use an agent for term life insurance. Though, once you have chosen the parameters of your policy, you can begin to compare insurance companies, and the rates they provide. Then, once you are ready to buy, you can contact an agent.
