How Can I Save Money on Prescription Medications?
For many people prescription medications are not optional. If you or a loved one needs a blood pressure medication and participating in active senior activities in order to maintain their health, it is not possible to think of doing without this prescription even if the cost continues to rise. Just because certain prescription medications are a requirement for you or your loved one, it does not mean you have to put up with their high costs or the worries that go with wondering when the costs of these or other medications will go up.
Saving Money on Medications
You may want to ask your medical provider about the medications you are currently prescribed. If your medication is able to be substituted with a generic brand it could save you a lot of money. Many times people are prescribed their medications and trust their provider with the choices for their health that they do not question whether or not there are options that could save them substantially over time. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor if the medicine you are provided is considered a name brand.
If it is, ask if there is a way for your prescription to be replaced with one for a generic brand. This type of medication is usually the exact same formulation but is offered at a lower, more affordable price. The reason it is wise to ask is because there are some medications that do not have generic formulas available. If this is the case for any of your prescriptions, you may still have an opportunity to save money.
If your doctor or health care provider tells you that the prescriptions you are being given do not have generic options, make it a point to consult the manufacturer of the medication. Often, pharmaceutical companies themselves understand that their medicines are required by some people who simply cannot afford them. These companies often offer money saving discount programs for people who need help in paying for required prescription medications.
Usually you will need to apply for the discount program by filling out a form provided by the pharmaceutical company. It may ask you to detail your income, provide tax returns and other information which helps the company determine whether or not you qualify for the program. Once you are approved the drug manufacturer may either issue you a card which you can present each time you go to fill your prescription to entitle you to the discount. Or, they may send information directly to your pharmacy.
This will allow you to receive the brand name medication needed either for free or at a substantial discount. Even if you do not qualify for a program such as this or your medication does not have a special discount program offered by the manufacturer, there are still other options for saving money on prescriptions. Since many medicines can cost hundreds of dollars for one month's supply, it is worth it to investigate these options before assuming that you are going to have to pay whatever the medicine costs.
Prescription Plans
Check around for any available prescription plans and programs such as term life insurance. These often cost a set amount per month and act like medical insurance in a sense. You pay for the plan and each prescription obtained is either covered by the plan or is available to you for a nominal co-payment. There are options for just about anyone who is in need of getting help saving money on prescription medications. If you are not comfortable paying for medicine you need, do not be ashamed to see about any applicable savings programs and plans available.
