Lowering Your Coverage Amount to Save Money
Life insurance does not have to have an extraordinarily high coverage limit in order to serve your family's needs adequately when the time comes. If you feel a need to save money, you might cut back on some of your monthly expenses. Perhaps life insurance coverage is not one of those expenses you feel you can get away with cutting back on since it is so important to your family's future.
Yet, if you review the amount of coverage you have now, you may find that you can lower that amount and enjoy a smaller premium payment without really sacrificing your family's future security. If you have $250,000.00 in coverage, perhaps by lowering that amount to $150,000.00 dollars you can still count on all your family's expenses and needs being met reasonably. But, you might be able to enjoy a more comfortable payment.
If you are thinking that making cuts to your expenses is only temporary, you can relax knowing that you can always increase your coverage amount again some time in the future. Of course, since life is unpredictable, you do want to make sure that any amount you lower the coverage amount to is enough to provide for your family's needs. If you purchased enough coverage when you bought the plan originally to cover funeral costs, regular monthly expenses, tuition for the children education, and so on you might find that you can opt temporarily for a limit that covers just funeral costs and final expenses.
You may need to make certain your spouse or partner understands what the ramifications of this temporary cut back are. For instance, he or she may now need to be prepared to find a job outside of the home or manage paying for child care. They need to understand that the new coverage limit is primarily for the funeral and other necessary expenses following your death. Since, in this example, they could no longer count on all regular monthly expenses being covered by the insurance they would need to be prepared to manage things accordingly.
Making a Permanent Adjustment
If you have decided that the coverage amount needs to be lowered permanently, you must make sure the new limit is going to be more than enough. In this case you might want to buy enough for the funeral and final expenses together with several thousand dollars for any other needs your family may have at the time. Remember, many term policy payments increase every few years based upon your age bracket at a certain point.
If you change your coverage limit now, it may affect the payment for a few months. But, it could increase if the following year you are ready to enter into a new age bracket as far as your insurer goes. If that payment only goes up a nominal amount, this may be of no concern to you. However, if you were lowering your coverage limit hoping to keep the payment as low as possible, you could be disappointed. You could also have inadvertently removed an amount of coverage your family cannot realistically do without.
As long as you plan carefully, you will not necessarily compromise your family's future security in the long term by lowering your coverage amount to save money in the short term. But, the important thing is to review any and all potential costs and expenses your family stands to face when in need of the insurance coverage. Make certain the family would not be caught short by lowering your limit too drastically.
