Where is the Safest Place to Store my Policy?
There is probably nothing worse than needing to file a claim on a life insurance policy only to have no idea where to find it. For a family who has just lost a loved one, this is not an uncommon occurrence. It can make a difficult time a little more stressful. However, if you have grown children who needed to fly home in order to attend to making final arrangements, they would need to be able to access the policy in order to make a claim.
Imagine if your spouse is grieving and needs the support of your grown children shortly after your death. Many times grown children and their spouses will contribute to making funeral arrangements and so forth in order to keep your surviving spouse from having to go through more grief. Yet, if your policy was purchased many years beforehand, it is possible that not only will they have a difficult time locating it, they would have to go through the process of trying to get the details through the insurer which can delay matters at a sensitive time.
It would not be likely they would be able to get the location of the policy from your spouse who is already very upset. It is not just a scenario such as this that makes it worthwhile to decide upon a safe place to store your policy as soon as you purchase it. If ever there was an emergency such as a fire, hurricane, tornado or earthquake, you would want to have all your important papers including a life insurance policy in a safe place where it would not be damaged or lost.
Choosing a Safe Location
For many people a safe location in which to store a life insurance policy is a safe deposit box at a bank. You may want to keep a copy for your own records in your home, too. This way, as the years pass you can easily refer to that policy and make changes or adjustments to it when necessary without having to make a trip to the bank and get the policy out of the safe deposit box.
But, safe deposit boxes are usually required to be opened with a key. In the example above, your grieving spouse may forget where that key is and therefore make finding the policy a challenge for your children, still. You might consider purchasing a safe for the home. You can set the combination as you like and place it just about any where in the home where you can have easy access to anything inside it.
Plus, a safe would typically be enough to provide ample protection for your documents and so on in the event of a fire or other disaster. If you needed to evacuate the home ahead of a hurricane, for instance, you might be able to easily transport the home safe with you and other essentials to another location. When choosing a safe location for a life insurance policy there are more things to consider than just whether or not it will keep from getting lost.
You probably can count on a life insurance company to have your information on record. However, since life insurance policies often are not utilized for many years after their purchase, it is usually best to keep the policy information on hand for the loved ones who will rely on that information to make use of the plan. You can judge where the safest place for your policy is, but wherever it is stored make sure your loved ones are told where to access it.
