How Can I Organize a Family Game Night?

Game nights bring friendly families together for evenings of food and fun. Couples across the country hold such nights in which several families converge at one house. Some of these families are longtime friends while others meet at work, church or during personal training at the gym. Game nights give married adults a chance to get together in groups and discuss their lives in a fun-filled atmosphere. Nights like these also give the children of these couples a chance to spend time amongst their peers in a non-school environment.

When you commit to organizing a game night amongst your peers, you'll need to decide upon the right mixture of people for these events. You'll probably want to choose couples with children of a similar age to yours, because they'll all be busy playing amongst themselves while you adults have your own group time. You should also choose families whose children are friendly with yours, because game nights might otherwise seem awkward for the kids if they're all left alone while the adults party.

Planning Themes for Game Nights

While discussing these plans with other couples, you'll need to determine which nights everyone can be available for these events. It might be the second Saturday of the month or it could be a bi-monthly event in the middle of the week, as long as everyone can commit to these dates on a regular basis. You'll also need to determine the most appropriate houses for hosting these game nights. Whether you choose the largest house in your group or simply the one that's easiest to drive to, it will need to be large enough to accommodate everyone in attendance. You wouldn't want to overwhelm a small household with large amounts of guests, nor would you want to have your kids spend the evening at a house in which there's not enough room for them to play.

The funnest thing about game nights are the themes behind them. When you arrange these game nights, you should all agree on themes to follow for the nights in question. On some nights you might have a science fiction theme while on other nights you may adopt the country and western style, either of which could involve dressing up and wearing costumes. One of the main reasons why adults hold these nights is for a chance to feel youthful again, through a lot of adult-themed discussions end up taking place as well. The children, meanwhile, will have equal fun as they go to a different part of the house and party with each other.

Arranging Food for Game Nights

Once you've decided on the time, place, location and participants, you'll need to determine how food will be served. You could have everyone pitch in or simply leave it all to the hosting house of each night in question, providing they can cook. Or you might decide that potlucks are the better option, because then you can all chip into the nightly edibles. You'll also have to agree on the food themes for these evenings, which could be Mexican one month and Chinese the next. You might even correlate the food to the chosen game or costume theme of the evening.

Since game nights primarily serve as quality time amongst adults, you'll want to hire a baby sitter for all the children. It might even make things easier if the kids are fed first before being sent to their corner of the house. Once the children are out of sight for the evening, all of you adults can let the true fun begin.
