Is a Nursing Home Better than Home Health Care?
When choosing the best place for your aging loved one to live out there lives, the decision is often dictated by how well they are capable of caring for themselves and how much money is needed for retirement. If your parent or grandparent is having trouble completing basic tasks themselves without any help such as brushing their hair, dressing, bathing, or fixing themselves proper meals to eat it could mean it is time to make the decision to either place them in a nursing home or hire a home health care aide. Both choices involve a special attention to cost, even with Medicare.
For a loved one, it is a choice that needs to be made with their best interests at heart. You probably do not want to take what little freedom they have away from them in the first place. But, if you have already tried taking turns with other family members to pay frequent, if not daily, visits to check in on your loved one and see that there is a growing need for care you cannot provide, it is probably time to make the choice as difficult as it may be.
Their Best Interests
What is hard is deciding which form of care is best for your loved one. When someone who is aging, but still has complete control of their mental faculties, realizes that they are a new candidate for a nursing home, they probably will react with a very strong desire to remain in their home. If this is a home where they have lived for many years, raised children and so on there is probably every reason to understand their desire to stay where they are.
But, there are also practical considerations for allowing your family member to stay home. For some elders, being home allows them to remain attached to familiar objects, places and furniture. If your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer's or experiences lapses in memory from time to time, being home is actually a healthier place for them. They may be better able to have a sense of place and less disorientation than they would waking up in a new, but strange room in a nursing home.
Yet, even if you and family members are close enough to visit frequently to make sure they have proper food and that they are taking medications, it might be possible the need for constant care is growing quickly. Choosing a home health care aide to stay with your family member may be a more viable option for them. If they do not require very serious medical attention throughout the day, it might be better for them to be cared for by a home health aide.
This way they can remain in the comfort of their home. You, too, may be more at ease knowing where they are and knowing that there are familiar surroundings, including neighbors and friends, to maintain the integrity of your loved one's life. For many people, ensuring the best quality of life for their loved ones is the top priority in choosing a nursing home or home health care.
For many other people, the cost is what dictates the final decision. But, in the end, you want to be sure your loved on is cared for as they need to be cared for. A nursing home may just be the only option even after a home health care option has been tried out. However, this does not necessarily mean that a home health care service is better than a nursing home. It just means it is best in the loved one's interests.
