Are there Local Activities Geared Toward Seniors in my Neighborhood?

If you are not sure if activities geared towards seniors even are available in your neighborhood, there are easy ways to check. Just because you have not seen a flier posted to your door or a postcard placed in your mailbox regarding various senior oriented events, does not mean they are not going on. You also do not necessarily have to belong to a special club in your area in order to hear about special classes and trips geared for seniors.

Places to Look for Activities

One way to find activities and on going events designed for senior citizens is to ask around. If you live in an apartment or condominium complex, you might ask some of your friends or neighbors for suggestions. You do not need to do more than walk to your nearest neighbor's home to enjoy a quick chat and find out more about what activities are happening in your neighborhood. This is a viable option whether you are asking for yourself or a parent or other relative.

Even if your neighbors are younger, they may have family members who know of good places that offer great activities locally. This can be a great link to establishing a new acquaintance which can lead to a friendship. While looking for an activity you could wind up finding someone to accompany your mom to that new class that is held on Tuesdays right in the middle of your work day.

Sometimes a quick browse through a small, local newspaper reveals places that host all kinds of free or low-cost insurance covered activities for seniors. Think of places that locals go to eat or have a quick cup of coffee. Sometimes by visiting places such as these you will see fliers posted for local events. This may be more of a hit and miss approach, but one more certain way to find activities for seniors in your neighborhood is to visit your local library.

A public library often hosts free activities on an ongoing basis to patrons of all ages. There may be book clubs offered or even free movie nights at your local library. They may even be looking for volunteers to help out by reading to children during library hosted story hours. If you are thinking of activities for seniors, keep in mind that sometimes these activities can actually be found in the form of rewarding part-time volunteer work. For many seniors, these activities would seem like anything but work.

Other places in your neighborhood to check are recreation centers. Local recreation centers may host games for seniors such as various card games, bingo or they may even host occasional dance classes. These activities also often are free. So, when checking around for local activities make sure to visit your local library or recreation center.

Another good place to find plenty of activities to choose from is your local adult or night school. Very often adult schools are community schools within local colleges. These organizations offer many classes, trips, events and more. You may want to get a copy of their most recent catalog in order to find one of many classes to take up at varying times of the year.

Adult or community school classes may cost some money, or be covered by term life insurance coverage, but the choices can be virtually unlimited. There may be fitness classes appropriate for seniors together with cooking classes or even classes that help build computer use skills so your loved one can surf the internet with confidence. Finally, do not forget to check with your local church or synagogue. Many times free activities are offered for seniors there.
