Life Insurance and Missed Payments

When you sign up for parenthood, and or just to have a term life insurance policy, there is tremendous responsibility attached to such agreements and life changing experiences. Much of the joy and happiness can be tampered down by the sheer financial responsibility attached to either (or both) of these stages of life and agreements. Every month for probably the rest of your life, there will be some responsibility involving money and your family. Even when your kids are adults, they may require financial help or guidance. Sometimes they make mistakes.

Along your lifetime, you may find that circumstances arise that may make you have to make hard decisions. Life can still rear its ugly head, throwing the unexpected right into your lap. Such decisions may include whether to pay the mortgage and eat, or keep up the term life insurance premium policy payments. If it is a temporary blip on your financial radar, then you may be able to recover in time to make the term life insurance policy payment before the cancellation date of your policy.

Communication Best Policy

Otherwise, if this seems more like a longer-term issue, it is important that you not avoid the issue by burying your head in the sand. Contact your term life insurance carrier and communicate your concerns with them. The good news about term life insurance is that it is somewhat flexible, in a sense.

Rather than just dismissing your policy that the insurance company set up, like some good family gyms, they may start out by charging you a late fee. If after months you continue to miss your payments, then they may cancel your policy. Of course, depending upon many factors, you may find yourself with a cancelled policy sooner rather than later.

Individual Policies, Carriers, and Circumstances

For one, it all depends upon the individual insurance carrier as to how soon your policy will be shut down on you. Otherwise, it also depends upon the individual details of the term life insurance policy that you have set up with your insurance company. Take note that if your missed payment is resulting from a natural disaster that has forced your whole family to move to temporary shelter, your situation may be an exception.

That is why it is so vital that you communicate with your term life insurance carrier that wrote the policy. They may sympathize with such unforeseen and exceptional circumstances, providing you with a grace period that may forgo fees and such for paying late. Find out if you can re-negotiate the terms of your payments. If you have been paying annually, in one lump sum, then you may be able to break that up into quarterly or monthly payments instead.

It may impact you in that the annual premium will end up costing extra. The insurance provider is going to add on fees in almost every case to cover the additional work it will take for them to process the payments. It may be nominal compared to having your policy cancelled all together. In particular, if you have been paying for many years on your term life insurance policy, it would be a shame to lose your coverage because of one financial rough patch.

Life insurance and missed payments do not have to be the end of your policy. If you are able to be brave and contact your carrier, you may find that they will be willing to help you to carry your policy through its term. After all, the insurance carrier has a vested interest in continuing its business relationship with you and your family.
