Life Insurance and Hazardous Activities
There seems to be a good list of no-nos for those who are shopping around for competitively priced term life insurance policies. Such activities used to merely include say smoking, or just poor health habits. They might have included having high cholesterol, high blood pressure, adult-onset diabetes, and not exercising.
While much of the population has heeded the warnings, and decreased risky health choices, news may not have necessarily spread to those who partake in high-risk types of hobbies. Such activities include traveling to exotic but dangerous places, parachuting out of planes, and even skiing. Sure, the risk of injuring yourself in many of these hobbies far exceeds your chance of death, they still increase your risk of dying. And, if you die, the insurance carrier would be forced to pay the death benefits out to your beneficiaries.
Ways to Cut Costs
It is important to keep in mind that the insurance companies look at the likelihood that they will have to pay out death benefits. If you can limit your risks then you will generally receive more favorable rates. Then again, if you were to just take a stroll down memory lane, and shop in an old-fashioned manner, you may also pay more money for term life insurance as well.
Imagine that it is still the era before widespread Internet use and insurance quoting online. You would more likely than not be limited to purchasing coverage from a local office and a local agent. They were well aware of this and might have charged you a higher rate because they could. In addition, there was no Internet, so it was more involved to locate the full information about how to purchase coverage. The Internet has made it much easier to find the best rates for the coverage that you want.
So, even if you are an avid base jumper, you do not have to automatically pay the highest insurance rates for your life insurance coverage. Now, it is still not guaranteed that you will receive the go ahead from every carrier to enjoy the protection of a term life insurance policy or an adjustable life insurance policy, given your more dangerous hobbies. Some activities just pose a greater likelihood that the carrier would have to pay out those benefits. And, if there is a way to increase your safety and security you may be able to convince them otherwise. Though, it is still up to the individual providers if they choose to provide you with a term life insurance policy.
Buying the Right Amount
It is a little like that famous nursery rhyme buying a policy. Some may offer too big of a policy, and others too little of a policy. The idea is to buy just the right amount of coverage rather than over or under buying your coverage limits. The other factor at hand is that you may find that your employer offers some protection as well. Though, if you are unstable in workplaces, or have a particularly volatile type of profession (one that is easily converted to freelance or contract) you may want to think twice about enjoying this company-offered benefit. You want to know that your term life insurance policy will be good the entire duration of the term you specify.
Life insurance and hazardous activities do not necessarily have to mix like oil and water. They can go together just fine, as long as you take the time to do a little extra leg work. Otherwise, you may find yourself hearing a negative or denial of coverage from underwriters. You may even want to find out the company policy beforehand.
