If you are not religious, try focusing on something else that brings you peace of mind.
When you are meditating it is important to keep three factors in mind at all times; posture, breath, and attitude. It is important to keep your spine straight because it helps to keep your mind alert, it also positions your nerves in the way that they are meant to be, relieving any pain you may have in your back, as well. Once you feel as though your body is relaxed, you want to begin low, deep breathing; by controlling your breath you are influencing certain processes in your body such as; immunity, circulation, and digestion. Finally, keeping a positive attitude during your meditation with help you stay focused and stress free.
