What is a Healthy Weight?

Just like obtaining life insurance, managing a healthy weight is something that is necessary for people of every walks of life. A good weight can mean the difference between feeling good and being forced to deal with a chronic health condition that comes as a result of being overweight or even underweight. But, the best weight for one person, such as a tall young man, may not exactly be the same as it would be for another person, such as a tall older woman of the same height.

Healthy weights are not just vague amounts that many people presume based upon a chart that they can find at their doctor's office. That tall young man may have less muscle than the tall older woman. This could be one reason he has a significantly different weight than she has. This is also because the difference in men's bodies versus women's bodies makes for very big differences in what is typically a healthy weight for each person.

When things besides height or sex are taken into account, there is really no way to set a healthy weight for any particular person. A healthy weight range, on the other hand, is something just about any person of any sex or height can strive to maintain. Or, if they are on the overweight or underweight side, they may fall far out of the healthy range and need to do something to manage their weight. If they do not, they could face potential health risks and conditions.

Height does have a lot to do with determining a good weight range for an individual. A smaller woman with more muscle tone probably weighs a lot more than a woman of the exact same height who possesses little muscle tone. They each may be within a perfectly healthy weight range for their size despite the difference in their muscle mass. In this instance, the woman who weighs more does not exactly pose a health risk for herself because she weighs more.

In fact, a person typically weighs more due to the amount muscle mass they possess. The more muscle a person has, the more their body is able to manage metabolizing foods. The better a body can metabolize foods, the better it is at keeping fat at bay. While some fat on any person is not likely to cause major health issues, too much of it can.

Looking at your Scale

If anyone is going to assume that their health is negatively affected by whatever adverse reading they see on a scale they could be very mistaken. If you weigh more due to exercising regularly with weights, it is not a negative thing to see your weight increase by a few pounds over time. It may send you into a slight shock if you have been assuming that the more you exercise the less you will weigh.

The real surprise is that by adding muscle to your body you are probably losing unhealthy fat. You are going to weigh more, but this is actually a positive thing. There are many different factors in determining any particular individual's healthy weight. For the most part, a healthy weight is something that falls within a range of several pounds.

It is not just one number for a person of a particular age, height and sex. The best way to know what a healthy weight is for you is to seek the advice of your doctor. You may wish to be five pounds lighter, but only if you are excessively out of a good weight range should you truly be concerned for your overall health.
