Talking to Your Kids About Health Risks
Talking to your kids about health risks is as important as talking to them about child life insurance, but you want to do it in an age-appropriate manner. Instead of making them feel like they need to quarantine themselves away from the rest of the world, you'll want to talk to them about healthy prevention without going overboard. Believe it or not, some germs are good for your body because they help build up your immune system. When your system has been introduced to something in a small dose, it can prepare itself for a major onslaught without all the symptoms raising their heads. Keep this in mind, but of course, that doesn't mean that it's safe to live in a dirty, moldy environment either.
Importance of Washing Your Hands
Most of the time, one of the best things you can teach them is to wash their hands often. So many germs and other conditions are spread by people touching their face, their food and putting things in their mouth like pens and pencils as they are working. This is one of the simplest and cheapest methods to avoid many situations from occurring. While there are the usual things such as washing your hands before you eat and after you use the restroom, also consider washing them when you get home from the grocery store or any other public place where you have been touching a lot of things such as a shopping trip. It's impossible to say who had what and picked up the same thing you did, and you can wash away the germs with soap and warm water.
Another thing to do is avoid sick people as much as possible. Many times, people don't know to cough or sneeze into their elbow when they can't get away from a group. However, if you can teach this to your children, you will help them learn social etiquette and also to keep their distance from someone who is not using that method. Even being in the area as someone who has a cold or the flu can bring up opportunities to share this problem, but there are things you can to do prevent it from taking hold. Keep sanitizer with you and use it sparingly if it has alcohol in it. Remember that you are going to be exposed to things; that's just the way life works with school, family outings and work environments. However, if you have had a chance to build up your immunity beforehand, you'll have a more likely chance of not getting sick.
Avoid Touching Blood Without Gloves
For issues with blood borne diseases, remember to wear gloves during cleanup of any of these situations. If you do find yourself without gloves, then it's best to wait until some arrive. Some of these problems can make you sick if you have an open cut or anything where a bacterium has a direct line into your bloodstream. Teach your children how to deal with these matters so they don't unknowingly expose themselves to something very serious and even deadly. You can obtain a lot of this instruction from the Center for Disease Control as they have documentation for families to use. This has to do with everything from the common cold to AIDS. Talking to your kids about health risks is important and will be beneficial advice to share with everyone else you know too. Remember that it's up to you to teach them how to protect themselves without living in a bubble, especially since that's impossible in today's world.
