How Often Should I Visit the Doctor?
If you are one of those individuals who feel somewhat guilty about not visiting your doctor for a regular check up you may wonder just how far you can push it. Has it been ten years since you have set foot in a doctor's office? That is probably a little too long to go without at least getting a general physical exam. If you do not feel sick and do not feel particularly excited at the prospect of making, and keeping, a doctor's appointment, you may realize that you are likely doing your health a disservice by not visiting him or her more consistently.
Why Check Ups Matter
If you do not feel like anything is wrong and you stick to your weekly exercise routine, why waste the doctor's time as well as your own? So what if it has been five years since your last visit? That is a little bit better than going for ten years, but it is still a problem. Or is it? If you feel fine, there is no reason to bother. It may not be necessary, or convenient, to get to the doctor once a year, but by letting more time than that lapse between check ups you could be subjecting yourself to health conditions that could be curtailed or even avoided with regular doctor's visits.
You do not have to visit your physician exactly once per year on the same day. Yet, even if you feel perfectly fine there may be changes in your blood pressure or cholesterol that need attention. These changes may not be apparent to you. They are only things your doctor can detect. As we age it becomes more important to make regular trips to the doctor to keep on top of changes in our health.
You would want to be able to catch certain conditions before they grow to be unmanageable. For instance, perhaps an unhealthy diet catches up with you enough that significant changes in your blood sugar take place. By visiting the doctor in enough time, he or she may be able to note these changes and steer you towards a healthier diet in time to keep you from developing diabetes.
If you were not good about visiting the doctor regularly, you may only make a trip to see him or her after noticing significant changes in your general health. Perhaps you are extremely tired all the time and cannot seem to get enough water to drink. After an exam and a few tests are done, your doctor announces you have diabetes.
You may not have necessarily averted being on the road to getting diabetes by avoiding regular check ups. But, you could have potentially caught it early enough that something as simple as a change in diet would have made a difference. Not visiting the doctor for regular check ups can lead to upsetting diagnoses like this and expensive regular medications together with, ironically, more frequent, and necessary, visits to the doctor's office.
Planning Regular Visits
If you have a condition such as high blood pressure, you probably already visit your doctor a few times each year. The reason for this is so that your condition can be monitored. If any changes take place, regular visits to the doctor's office help you and your doctor stay on top of them so proactive action can be taken to preserve your health. You may not have to get to the doctor once each year in order to stay healthy, but waiting years between visits is risky. Talk with your doctor to see how often they recommend you visit them.
