How Adoption Can Affect Your Family
Adoption is a beautiful thing and brings more joy into your life than you may be prepared for. Whether you are a couple or a family with children already, choosing to adopt means you are adding another member to your family without going through the traditional pregnancy, labor and delivery. While you are not the birth parents, you are still the parents and this is the first thing to remember when it comes to making the decision to adopt.
The adoption process is in no way easy. It can take years for your application to be approved, regardless of whether you are adopting nationally or from overseas. However, with enough patience and persistence, it can happen and is well worth the wait. If you are choosing to adopt then now is the time to start preparing yourself and your family mentally and physically for the journey of adoption.
The first thing you need to do is let your children know that this is something that you are considering. Once you have filed the adoption paperwork you may need to wait three months or three years before your application is approved. However, it is best to prepare your children for the possibility of another sibling as soon as possible.
Adoption and Your Family
If you do not have any other children and have decided to adopt, then you need to take the same measures as any other expectant parent including buying clothing, decorating the nursery, throwing a baby shower and reading up on caring for a new baby. It does not matter if you are not there to give birth to the child - you are still going to be responsible for putting her to sleep, for dressing her, for feeding her and for giving her plenty of love and affection. This is something that comes naturally to most parents once they have their child in their arms.
Essentially, adoption will change the dynamic of your family in the same way as any new addition will. Having a new baby in the house means sleepless nights, more tension and stress and less time for yourself and for your spouse. However, this is all part of the fun of being parents, whether this is the first time or the third time. Taking each day at a time and working together as a team will help ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
Ask your older kids, if you have them, to help out with the new baby. They can help you feed her and choose her outfits. They can also help out around the house by unloading the washing machine, folding the laundry and setting the table. Make them feel useful by asking them to help out as much as possible. This will make everyone feel involved in the new addition.
As baby gets older you have the decision of whether to tell them about their adoption or to keep it a secret. It is up to you whether you choose to tell your child or not. Many parents prefer to keep the lines of communicative open by letting the child know about the adoption. However, this is up to you.
There is no guarantee to know how adoption can affect your family as every family is different. You may find that you feel completely comfortable from day one or that you feel a little nervous for the first little while. It takes time, patience and a lot of communication between family members to adjust to any big event, such as the addition of a new family member, whether through natural birth or through adoption.
