Helping Your Kids Make Healthy Choices

You care so much for your children, and invest a good deal of your time, thoughts, and money to helping ensure they grow up healthy. Part of your job is to find ways to encourage them to extend the good habits that you have imbued them with well into adulthood, and throughout their childhood, while they are away at school, or out with friends. When they go to school they are constantly tested with tempting foods filled with fat, salt, sugar, and cholesterol.

If you are fairly strict at home with guiding their eating, it can have one of two effects on their lives. For one, they may easily follow your lead, instead eating the healthy and nutritious meal that you have packed for them. Or, it can conversely backfire, with them either trading their lunch for something more unhealthy or just jumping in and buying whatever they please, regardless of health. Sometimes they may want what they perceive to be forbidden, only for that reason alone.

Making Good Choices

So, it comes down to teaching them essentially how to make good choices on their own. Start out by allowing them choices at home, and going with their decision, or negotiating a good balance between temptation and sensible eating habits. You may start out by letting them decide what you will have for dinner. If they always want pizza, chicken wings, and soda, then you may try another approach. Maybe give in once per month to their wish, or buy one slice of pizza, and maybe only a couple of wings.

This tactic will teach them moderation rather than deprivation. Self deprivation seems to make the forbidden foods more appealing. Another avenue to take would be to show them how to make foods that they love in a healthier but tasty manner. For one, if you would like, you could make pizza at home, with whole wheat crust, drizzled with olive oil. You may decide to incorporate fresh vegetables and quality cheese products as well. Teaching Them to Lead

The good part of allowing your child to make age appropriate decisions is that it provides them with confidence in their own ability to make decisions. As you are taking the time to guide them in making such assertions in their own young lives, you are building the cornerstones to a great foundation of a life filled with healthful decision making, from meal time to including regular exercise in their routines. There is a lot of good that come from being a good guide, and knowing when to exert full parental rights to say no to protect your children.

Helping your kids make healthy choices involves looking at their personality. Teach them to lead their peers so their healthy eating may positively influence their friends, while keeping them on the track to a long life full of good health well into the future. As your child grows closer to adulthood, their peer groups increasingly grow in importance and impact. And, you will have done your work and will have to start letting go as they move more and more into an independent life where they exist wholly as an individual.
