How Much Exercise Should I Get Each Week?

If you are like many people, you may feel that you are lacking when it comes to getting enough exercise. Perhaps it is not that you mean to be lazy, it is just that you have so many other responsibilities to attend to each day. Sometimes it seems to be too much to fit even ten minutes of exercise into a daily schedule, never mind thirty minutes.

Knowing your Physical Limits

One way to find out just how much exercise is right for you is to visit with your doctor. It might be that he or she will tell you that you are at a healthy weight, and in good enough health to aim for about thirty minutes of exercise per day. That might either make you leap out of the doctor's office and into a gym to sign up for a lifetime membership or it might make you feel so week in the knees you cannot imagine putting even one exercise session in.

Bear in mind that with your doctor's help you can also find out just what kind of exercise may be best for you. A thirty minute walk may be just fine. Choose to visit a local market on foot instead of driving and you can accomplish an errand that needs to be done amid your busy schedule anyhow. It is just you will have been able to sneak in an acceptable exercise session.

But for any individuals who have certain health conditions a walk outside may not be the best exercise. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, it might be better to take a different route to get your exercise in. Your doctor can, and should, guide you since overdoing even a seemingly harmless thirty minute walk around your block could spell a serious issue for you.

If you have checked into various exercise options from video sessions to adult school classes, you may be familiar with hearing a recommendation that it is best to consult with a doctor prior to beginning any exercise regimen. It would be any health concerns that could be aggravated by undertaking too much of the wrong type of exercise for you that created this warning of sorts. Yoga class may seem perfect for anyone of any age, for example.

But, if you have had a relatively recent knee or back surgery, it is definitely wise to check with your doctor. Perhaps your exercise regimen needs to wait. Or, perhaps it needs to be built up over time. For many individuals who are in perfect health, but not perfect shape, building up to a target exercise regimen is a good idea.

Starting an Exercise Routine

You could begin a walking routine by doing about ten minutes every other day one week. The following week you could build it up to fifteen minutes and so on, until you have reached an ideal level for your health and well being. As to hitting a stride where the amount of time and effort is increased until you are getting exactly enough exercise each week, there is really no way to say when that will be.

Getting as much exercise as you feasibly can is better than ignoring the responsibility of maintaining good health by opting to sit on the couch. Your doctor can inform you of exercise guidelines which would be set by any health concerns or physical limitations. There may be some types of exercise to avoid. Or, you may be perfectly ready to get some type of exercise in each week if not as much as the doctor recommends.
