Creating Healthy Meals and Snacks for Children

When it comes to children, picky eaters, waning appetites for nutritional meals may make it difficult for you to ensure their health. That does not have to be the case, though. Instead, it is important to look at creating a balance. You may need to plan a family meeting and evaluate your children as individuals. Accentuate what they love. They may love chocolate, cookies, or have food jags.

It can depend upon the individual preferences, the age group or stage of growth, as to what you as a parent can do to make healthy meals and nutritious snacks for your children. If, for instance, your child is going through eating jags, you will want to work with their changing tastes. A jag is when your child, typically a pre-school aged child, wants to eat nothing but one food. Sometimes it pulls back, and can come back again.

For instance, if they love peanut butter and will only eat that, there are many ways to incorporate that creatively into meals. There are peanut butter sandwiches, with bananas on whole wheat or multi-grain bread. In addition, you can spread the peanut butter into celery stalks, and add raisins. Peanut butter can be added to sauces to make a tasty dish of sesame peanut butter noodles. Of course, it is always wise to make sure that you know whether your children suffer from any food allergies before hand.

Feeding Friends Well

In addition to feeding your own children, your son or daughter may have many play dates. Make sure that you do not serve them any foods that may trigger allergies while in your care. It may be best to stay away from peanut butter in that case. There are many other ways to ensure that your children get proper nutrition in a fun way that will stimulate their appetite for good foods that are also flavorful.

Kids also take well to interactive foods, which can keep their interest. Having finger foods available, that are in small portions, it can make it a good exploration for your children. Items such as grape tomatoes, bite-sized mozzarella, colorful yogurt, with their favorite fruit can make for a great snack. Cutting grilled cheese sandwiches in fun shapes. If they do not like the crusts, well, it can be a battle, or a little compromise for you to make.

Feast or Famine

If cutting the crusts off makes them eat the rest of the sandwich, and they are typically not interested in eating (right now), then it can help. Of course, there are periods where young children will not eat one morsel. Then there are other times when they eat more than the whole rest of the family in one sitting. Essentially, it is important that you do what works. It can get dicey as your children start deciding what they like as opposed to what they dislike, or can just tolerate. In addition, they can be sequencing through a lot of different stages.

Creating healthy meals and snacks for children may feel like rocket science sometimes. It is best to work with your children. As with anything else with your children, it is best to exercise some degree of caution when becoming tired of your children's tastes. For many parents this can translate into just giving in too easily. This can create a picky eater, even if that is not what you were intending to create. For other parents, they are too strict on their children, requiring that they eat whatever is on their plate. That can create the opposite of what you may want -- a plate cleaner.
