Finding your Policy Number

Group life insurance is different from individual life insurance in a number of different ways. Not only will you have an individual personal policy number but you will also have a group number. It can be hard to find out which one you are required to have and which one is which. If you do need to make a claim on your group life insurance policy it is usually during a time of emotional stress which makes it even seemingly easy tasks much difficult. Finding your policy number may require a phone call or two to your insurance agency just to be case.

The first thing you need to understand when it comes to finding your policy number is what it is. There are two main numbers you will most likely encounter - your group number and your individual number. Your group number is a number that defines what type of plan you have under your group life insurance policy. Everyone that is part of your group policy will have this same number. Your group policy number will be able to determine what policy you are covered under but it will not be able to provide you with the compensation.

This is why you have an individual policy number as well. Your individual policy number identifies you apart from the others on the plan. While you and your co worker may both have the same group number, your policy numbers will vary as well as your benefits class. In order to get compensation from any insurance company you will most likely need both numbers.

Group and Individual Policy Numbers

So where do you find this information? If you have gone through your individual insurance papers and cannot find your group policy number, then it is probably because many companies do not actually print this number on your paper. Instead they work with your individual policy number. In order to get your group policy number you may need to contact your insurance company. If you quote your individual policy number then someone should be able to find out this information for you.

If you have a life insurance card or policy stored away in your file or in the corner of your wallet, then this is where you will find your individual policy number. It should be on your card or on the front page of your policy. If you have lost your insurance papers or simply cannot find your individual policy number anywhere, then your best option is to call your insurance agency. Explain to them the situation. You will need to answer specific questions to confirm your identity for security purposes before your number will be revealed.

As mentioned above, often when you need to make a claim and need access to your reference numbers you are already under a lot of pressure. You may wish to give your insurance agency a call sooner rather than later and get the group policy number. Write it down on the front page of your insurance documents for easy retrieval when you do need it. There is nothing more frustrating than having to deal with a long wait time to retrieve information when you are busy.

Finding your policy number should only take a short phone call but you never know how busy the company will be when you do need the number. Take the time to call now rather than later to avoid any more headaches down the road if you do need to make a claim. While you hope this day will never come, you just never know and it's best to be prepared by knowing all your reference numbers beforehand.
