If you do work full time and have a family, it may not be convenient to get home early in the evening and realize that your stress levels are high enough to require immediate regulating. A good one mile run could help you burn off stress and raise your body's natural mood enhancing chemicals. But, it may not be the quickest or most convenient option when your children are irritable, hungry and in need of you to fix a half way decent meal the moment you walk in the door.
Instead, you may have to set limits on your time at work knowing how things are at your home around the dinner hour which just happens to coincide with rush hour. By anticipating stressful moments in your daily schedule, you can better plan on how to manage them by taking some time to yourself. For instance, being firm about leaving your office by a certain time so that your commute home can be safe and stress-free can be helpful.
Perhaps on the way home you listen to an inspirational audio book or you allow yourself to enjoy relaxing music. This time to yourself can have you calm down even as you get through traffic. If you can look at the situation with a creative viewpoint, you might find that being alone in the car on the way home despite traffic is a perfect setting for taking much needed time to yourself.
You cannot expect to do your best each day if you are not feeling well. If taking care of your overall health means going for that one mile run daily, then make sure to carve time out in your schedule for it. Finding time for yourself might require being creative, setting limits and also making loved ones aware of these limits. But, it is a vital part of maintaining your well being.
