Should I Eliminate Sugar From my Diet?
Sugar is a double-edged sword for many people. While most people find sugar tasty, it's a commonly known fact that sugar is unhealthy for the human body and makes it hard to control diabetes. Some people resort to sugary foods for an energy boost, but beyond the quick rush you can get from sugar there's no health benefits involved. As a pure carbohydrate with no nutrients, sugar could be viewed as a drug instead of a food. For these reasons and many more, it's wise to either cut down on sugar or eliminate it from your diet entirely.
Reasons to Stop Eating Sugar
There are many health risks involved in high levels of sugar consumption. When you eat lots of sugary foods, you're adding lots of calories to your system with no nutrients to balance them out. In addition to causing cavities and tooth decay, sugar can have ill-effects on your immune system. Sugar can also prevent you from absorbing vitamin C by attaching itself to white blood cells which would otherwise be carrying vitamins through your body. Sugar can even have ill-effects on your mental health by depriving your brain of glucose, which can ultimately leave you with memory loss.
For obvious reasons, people should keep their sugar consumption down to a minimum. While it's alright to satisfy your sweet cravings now and then, you should always space things out and never indulge too much within a single setting. If you're suffering from diabetes or other dietary health problems, you should probably eliminate sugar from your diet entirely. Eliminating sugar might seem difficult to some people, but it's really not too hard to accomplish if taken one step at a time. One of the primary secrets to eliminating sugar from your diet is to replace your sweet-tooth with another type of craving.
Eliminating Your Cravings for Sweets
To break from the habit of eating sweats, you'll need to keep them out of your presence. If you no longer keep sweets anywhere in your house, you won't be prone to go snacking at odd hours of the day. After awhile, the absence of sweets in your home will loosen the grip that they've had over your taste buds. A good replacement for sugary junk food is fruit, particularly hand fruits that don't require washing and can be eaten in small doses. In addition to being convenient as snack foods, fruits contain their own natural sweetness and essential nutrients.
Another way to eliminate sweets from your diet is by replacing them with spicy foods. While most people have just as much love for spice, the human appetite generally places sweets and spices into completely different settings. So while you might love spicy Thai or Mexican food for lunch or dinner, it's probably not what comes to mind as you sit around watching television or surfing the Internet. But if you challenge yourself to reach for spicy snacks instead of sweet ones, you'll eventually readjust yourself into viewing spicy foods in a whole new light.
If you think of sugar as an addiction, you could replace it with far healthier habits. Many fitness freaks consider their urge to lift weights at the gym as their personal addiction. Whether you prefer weight machines or cardio exercises, you could turn workouts into your new addiction by programming your mind into viewing such things positively. You might have difficulty abstaining from the energy boosts which sugar can provide, but there are alternatives such as vitamin B supplements. But whichever methods you use to overcome your sugar cravings, your health will drastically improve in the end.
