Creating a Balance Between Work and Family

When you have a family it seems that you have to often times work harder to provide for them. The key to creating any type of good balance between work to support them and time spent with your family is to work smarter, not harder. Whether you have a young or rapidly maturing family, it is essential that you look at how you are using your time and look into getting a good life insurance policy. If you feel like you need a vacation after taking a vacation, then it may be time to rethink how you are leading your life.

Know first and foremost that as the seasons and years pass, your family's needs will change. Therefore, it is a conscientious flow of decisions that you will need to make over the course of your life as a parent to make time to spend with them. They may have ballet, soccer, and t-ball games and performances, or have moved well beyond that stage into their early college years. The difference between these two stages of life is that if your kids are away at college, you may see them only on major holidays, during college recess.

This can allow you to plan amply for a trip out to their school, or to take time off of work a year in advance. As far as the younger kids goes, you may need to have more flexibility built into your job. While it may seem like a catch-22, you may have the money but not the time, as they say. It is important in that situation to prioritize and make time.

Making a List

It may help if you stop for a bit and decide what you want to be able to do with your family, each year. Involve them in the process. If your daughter cares little about having you at every game, but demands that you see her every last ballet recital, then make time for the ballet. Your spouse may be the one who picks up and drops off the whole soccer team from practice and games anyhow. If your son, on the other hand, does not want you to miss a moment of his baseball season, make it a point to have someone from your family at each game.

They may surprise you, though, and prefer to spend extended quality time together on vacation, whether it is far away at an exotic place, or just spending some time camping in the local campsite. The idea is to avoid looking at other families in terms of what activities they do, and then aim to mimic them. Instead, you may find that they are actually in quite similar time crunches. Yet, they may just be sending their last of six kids off to college.

There is much to learn from others in terms of how to establish priorities, protect your time at work, and to know when to find a new job even. Many decisions and opportunities present themselves throughout your life that you share with your family. The most important idea is to determine what is important for your whole family. In addition, keep in mind that there are many firsts that are best witnessed first hand.

Creating a balance between work and family can take some degree of juggling. It may not work out perfectly every time, but it is definitely worth evaluating if and how you can make time. If you feel like you are missing out on everything, then it may be time to re-prioritize. It is not always about the biggest, newest house or the most prestigious schools.
