Does my Beneficiary Need to Review my Policy Before I Purchase It?

It is complicated enough at times to choose a life insurance beneficiary or determining a power of attorney. Unless your beneficiary is your spouse, there are many things to consider before designating a beneficiary. For instance, if you are thinking to designate your children as beneficiaries but they are minors now and may be at the time the life insurance benefits are needed, you may need to designate a guardian who is of legal age to be the beneficiary instead. This is because most insurance companies will not pay benefits out to a minor child.

In a situation like this the answer to the question as to having a beneficiary review the policy before you purchase it might be a yes. You would want a guardian to understand their role and responsibility in handling the death benefits and having them distributed properly to your children after a funeral has been paid for and other expenses have been met. They may not need to review the policy in terms of how much coverage you are planning on buying.

They may also not need to have any say in what kind of options you choose when buying that policy like frequency of premium payments. Yet, because they are a designated beneficiary they absolutely would need to understand what their role will involve in the event the life insurance benefits are needed before your children attain legal age. Of course, if you are designating a spouse as your beneficiary there may be little or no need for them to review the policy either.

For one thing, your partner may already be involved actively in helping with the purchase of the life insurance coverage. They may understand that the purpose behind it is to provide for them and any of your children in the event they were to lose you prematurely. The benefits most likely are being purchased in order to prevent your family from having to withstand a significant financial difficulty after your death. They are likely to already be involved in choosing an appropriate coverage limit based upon the expenses and debts you both have.

Deciding to Purchase a Policy

Purchasing a life insurance policy is probably not something you will do without putting some effort into making sure it is the best policy you can buy. Most people will need to estimate how much they would like their death benefits to cover for their families after they arrange for a funeral. For this reason, if your spouse is the designated beneficiary it is possible that they are already aware of the details of the policy which is about to be purchased.

However, if you do decide to designate children as your beneficiaries there may be a question about having them review the policy before it is purchased. If they are minors now, they likely would not understand what is involved in life insurance purchases anyway. Besides this, in a legal sense they are not of age to make decisions about matters such as this because they simply cannot understand such complex issues.

It is a very personal decision to have a beneficiary review a policy before you decide to purchase it. It may be a good idea in some instances for a beneficiary to understand what they are going to be responsible for before you formally designate them as a beneficiary. If they are uncomfortable with the idea of it, it is better to find out before buying the policy. This way you can designate a more suitable beneficiary.
