Can a Beneficiary Decline to Accept my Life Insurance Benefits?

A beneficiary can decline to accept your life insurance benefits. Some people may wonder why this could ever occur, but there are instances where it is possible for the designated beneficiary to choose not to accept some or all of the life insurance benefits. Since you would not be able to do anything about this sort of situation were it to happen with a beneficiary of yours, you may want to do whatever you can now to help avoid having your loved ones go through this.

The first thing to understand is that it is not likely to occur. For instance, you designated your wife as a beneficiary on your term policy. You have a ten year term and you have two young children who may just be entering college as that term comes closer to its completion. If something were to happen to you, it would probably not be likely that your wife would decline the benefits since there would be many expenses she would have to meet including paying for a funeral shortly after your death.

After all, the children would need funds for college and the whole reason you and your wife selected the term policy was to protect the family in just such an unfortunate situation. Yet, assume for some reason your beneficiary declines those benefits. For whatever reasons, your beneficiary would first need to file a disclaimer with the insurance company.

This would be her official notice to the insurer that she is declining the benefits. Automatically, the insurance company would hold onto the benefits temporarily. They would have to eventually proceed with going through proper channels to have the funds managed on their end since they were not paid out as expected.

Choosing Additional Beneficiaries

The likelihood of this happening to your policy may seem preposterous. But, if you are paying for coverage now it probably does not make very much sense to risk having to lose out on obtaining the benefits when they are needed most. For this reason, even if it seems highly unlikely that your beneficiary would have any reason to decline the benefits, it is wise to select more than one beneficiary.

For instance, you have the primary beneficiary be your wife and a secondary beneficiary could be a sibling. Or, you may even choose to designate the eldest child to be a named beneficiary. In some instances, unfortunately, a named beneficiary passes away before the policy benefits are needed. In this case, automatically the second named beneficiary would be in line to obtain the policy benefits.

It may seem like something no one would ever do, but it is possible for someone to decline life insurance benefits even though they are entitled to them. You will not be around to witness whether or not this occurs, naturally. However, if it is important enough to you to take precautions now so that the benefits you are paying into will go to the use you intend, you can make sure that you have additional named beneficiaries on your policy.

If you need to add or change your beneficiaries, you can easily do this by contacting your insurer. It will not change the benefits or the policy premium, but it might make you feel a little bit better. Most of the time a designated beneficiary is going to need the benefits. Since you know that a beneficiary can decline life insurance benefits, you may want to give yourself added peace of mind by designating more than one beneficiary on your policy.
