How Long Should I Wait Before Asking About my Application Status?
If you have finally decided to buy life insurance, you probably do not want to be without it for very long. That is to say, you already know how important it is to prepare for the unexpected by getting an affordable, solid plan in place. Naturally, that plan will not go into effect until your application has been processed and you have been accepted into the plan desired.
Getting Coverage in Place Promptly
While it is not necessary to get too nervous while waiting for an application for life insurance to be processed, you may actually need to know how long the application process should take before filling it out and submitting it. There are some practical reasons for this. For one thing, you may want to find out if you have not been approved so that you can begin looking for another policy to apply for in order to not go much longer without coverage.
If you have been turned down for one policy it does not necessarily mean you cannot get coverage. You may simply need to find an insurer that will write policies for individuals like yourself if, for instance, the rejected application was due to a certain health condition. At any rate, even if you are approved for a plan, if you have changed your mind about the policy with that company and want to apply for or purchase a different plan from a different company it can help to know within a reasonable time what the status of your application is.
Again, this is simply because you do not want to go without life insurance any longer than absolutely necessary. But, a lot of things that affect the processing of your life insurance application have to do with the method you used to submit that application to the insurer. If you filled out an application and mailed it to the insurance company, it would not make very much sense to call and ask them about its status the very next business day.
They most likely would not have even received it by that point. However, if you submitted an application via an online method, it may not be out of the question to ask about the status of that application the following business day. If your insurance company can take an application over the phone it may speed the process up, but it may not be possible for them to give you approval over the phone.
One way to get an idea about the expected wait for an application to be approved or not is to check with the insurance agent or broker. There are some companies that do offer instant approvals by telephone or online. Still, if you have decided to provide your prospective insurer with an application by mail, you want to know how long to expect that it will take to hear about whether or not you have been approved.
When getting life insurance coverage, it is important to get that coverage in place as quickly as you can. If you are unsure about the offer you initially applied for and are thinking of going with a different life insurance company you may want to keep this next application process from being delayed while waiting to hear back from the first company. There should not be a need to rush, but it cannot hurt to ask your prospective insurer how long you can expect to wait before hearing about your application status.
