Am I Too Old to Get a Pet?

If you have had pets before in your life, you may have had the heartbreak of saying goodbye to them when their short lives end. As you grow older in years, you may be concerned about leaving your pet behind, or them outliving you, or even how they might get along with your home healthcare provider. They certainly are sensitive creatures, and it would be a shame to have their well being left up to chance.

For starters, it may make sense to consider how old you are in relation to how long the pets you are thinking about getting typically live. A cat from a long line of cats that live to 20 may not be the best fit if you are celebrating 80 on your next birthday. Yet, smaller pets that reside in a cage or a tank may work best for you. A fish, hamster, frog, and even a bird may provide some companionship.

Be careful here, though, because a parrot will live 50 years if not more, typically. On the other hand, you may have family who are willing to take in your beloved cat or dog if you should pass. If you can make some type of contingency plans that may help allay your concerns. While your pet may be sad if you do pass before them, at least they could have the next best thing: your family or friends.

Embracing a New Hobby

For others the golden years are a time to keep active and to give back to the community around them. If you have ever had a pet touch your life, then you may instead want to consider volunteering with your local animal rescue. You may find that they have a need for foster families. If you have a lifelong love of animals, enough spring in your step to keep up with various furry friends, and some degree of patience, consider this option.

It will allow you to do good, while not being entirely committed to having any one animal. In addition, you can have the animal rescue come in and check up with emails or calls, to make sure that you are all doing well. The other option is to consider your home and how pet proof it is. If you have a fenced-in yard, you may consider having a doggy door added, if you would like a dog.

Have a Plan

Others thrive on having multiple pets in their home. Obviously no one can predict whether you will live another 30 years or 20, but it is important to consider what will happen, just in case. It is potentially a problem that any individual at any age could face if they leave pets behind after they pass. It is important to have some directions as to which rescue groups or family and friends may be willing to come in and take in your beloved pets.

You may be afraid that you are too old to get a pet. Though, the idea is to enjoy your life, while also being prepared within reason. Make sure that most of all you take the time to figure out what kind of animal you want, and how much responsibility you want. It may be too much for you to get a puppy. That is a lot of work to train a dog, and tend to their needs constantly. If you live in a big building, with little lawn for you to walk, it can get tiring going up and down the elevator 10 times a day to take out a puppy. Do your research about breeds and types of pets.
